Computer Science

In computer lab, all students have been using Code.org’s Courses.This Intro to Computer Science is fun, collaborative, and creative!It’s designed to inspire students to continue learning howtechnology improves real world relationships, connections, andlife.

Students learn:
• basic computer programming
• higher-order thinking, logic and multi-step problem solving
• creativity and perseverance

Computer science is the study of computers and algorithmic processes. This includes their hardware and software designs,their applications, and their impact on society. Every child should have a computer science foundation in our society as jobs have multiplied exponentially in this area.

If your child knows their secret character, let them take you for aspin on any coding we have already done in class or wait until Isend home their secret character pictures at the end of thecourse.

This week we are taking a break from coding and going back toword processing skills with Valentine's Day cards. Be on thelookout for them!

First Graders should be coming home with their Netsmartz Safety Certificates soon. If you haven't seen it, please ask your child to get it completed in the next lab time possible.

Technology 1-3-18

Kindergarten has been learning to find "Read to me Audio" books on getepic.com.  This is free for educators, but parents can get a free 30 day trial.  There are subscription sales to watch out for as well.  This is one of the programs I would have purchased as a parent, way back when my own children were in Primary school.  The Read to me Audio feature underlines or magnifies each word as the book is being read.   Super cool!

Building our working memory with a game is fun!

What's Happening

This year our paraprofessional helpers had to be taken out of our rooms to work with students on reading and math.  Most of our classes are smaller, but it's been a challenge to get to help every student as they need it.  I'll be doing a lot less with kids, but I know they will still learn something this year.  I'm excited to tell you about their first few weeks with me.  Read on....

Kindergarten

Week 1 and 2 worked on logging in with our secret username and password.  Shhhh!  It's a secret! 🙊

Students are also learning to click once on the left.  If they right-click, they are working on how to problem solve what to do.  Week 3 we are creating our own picture using the Kidpix drawing program.  This is a program that we have purchased at school.  We heard the words "tools" and "toolbars".  Kids have time to explore drawing, making shapes, using a fill bucket, stamping and working with clipart which the program calls stickers and finally animation.

1st Grade
The first week of school we reviewed internet safety and classroom procedures.  Then we practiced using our Kidpix drawing program.  Next we created a word search online, printed a copy and played the interactive version online with a friend.  The last two weeks, we have spent some time on the  United For Literacy & Epic websites discovering what awesome books and learning videos we have available online.  Taking the time to practice eBook and Video features is a must and the kids LOVE it!

2nd Grade
Like 1st grade, we spent the first week of school reviewing internet safety and classroom procedures.  This proves very helpful when kids see open chat rooms on the popular programs such as Roblox.  In the following weeks we added lessons on how to access our own keyboarding account, Google Classroom and a math favorite for kids, Prodigy.  Last week we practiced keyboarding with proper hand placement.  This week we are using a Google browser extension called "Talkie" to help us read text that may be difficult for us at this grade level.  I'm having students read an article from Dogonews (a news site for kids that reads the article to the students as it highlights the words being read) then they are taking a quiz using Google Forms to answer question based on the article.  We are using Talkie to read the question to us if we need help.  This extension will help make high interest reading very accessible to our young readers.

In addition to the daily lesson plans, students are beginning to work on their "Working Memory" with me.  They are echoing strings of numbers being said to them that will help when lots of directions are given and it helps with personal passwords.

GO TIME students worked on biographies.  We didn't quite get to complete them so excuse the errors.  It is worth it to share what they did accomplish though.  Enjoy!

Below are the presentations each student did just to learn how to make a PowerPoint Show.  In class, they stood up and presented them with dialogue so the intended audience would fully comprehend their message.  Our next show will be digitally narrated.

GO TIME

We've been using Google Classroom for the past 2 weeks during GO TIME.  It is finally going smoothly.  With Classroom, I am able to assign activities to students and they can work individually to complete them at their own pace.  This is particularly helpful with a group like this.

Assignments have included:

1. Typing a poem

2. Typing out their opinion papers.

3.  Reading a Newsela article about Mozart taking a quiz on it an  then listening to his music.

4. Reading an article about autism and creating a word cloud about it.

5. Reading an AR picture book of their choice (at a 3rd or 4th grade level), taking a Quiz on it and taking a screen capture of their score for evidence.

6.  Reading an article and watching a short video about Edible Water Bubbles that will change the plastic bottle industry and answering questions about the article. (This type of assignment needs a little more work on my part to get them to answer in complete sentences and use evidence from the article.)

7.  Reading an article (or having it read electronically to them about redefining planets and Pluto and completing a word search on its vocabulary.
