SECOND GRADE- 1st Grading Period

Our TECHNOLOGY WEBPAGE: http://selahvikingtech.weebly.com/

We started the year with 2nd graders creating an ABC Mouse account with an avatar. This would allow them something fun to do whenever they had completed the daily task.   This program is FREE for our users.  Just email your request to have it and I can send to you your child specific code.

Next we taught them how to use the Microsoft Paint program and related it to the Kidpix program they used last year.

The following few weeks we learned how to safely search Internet images, save using a right click in the documents folder, organize and label. In the future, we will be talking about copyright issues when using other people's images.
By the end of October, we were introducing the new EPIC website.  These are free high interest ebooks just right for primary & intermediate students.  Many of these are Acclerated Reader books and they have a large selection of Read to Me Audio books (my personal favorite).   From this website we learned to use the Snip Tool to save screenshots.

By November, we were full speed into our first keyboarding lessons.  We use a program called Typing.com.  Each student has an individual account that tracks their progress.  Weekly, we try to fit in 5-10 minutes of practice.  Students work toward a goal of 12wpm with 100% accuracy.

Finally,  we reviewed our Safety Rules and Coding that we did last year.

Please feel free to contact me with questions.

FIRST GRADE: 1st grading period

FIRST GRADE

Students began the year on ABC mouse adding avatars and learning the new login procedure.  We taught them how to use the Paint program on a PC computer with the focus on tool bars.
Next we drew a connection with the tool bars they were already familiar with in Kidpix.

EBOOKS were on the agenda after working with publishing and tool bars.  These are great free websites!  http://www.getepic.com  http://www.uniteforliteracy.com/

Each class has had a different experience in technology due to 2-hour delays, school assemblies, Winter program practice, Thankgiving and Winter breaks.  In light of that here is a list of activities your child may have participated in:

1.  Create Thank you cards  for our Veterans using:
4.  Navigating from our new Selah Schools webpage to our technology page
